Mona Lisa Touch

Mona Lisa Touch

What is MonaLisa Touch?

MonaLisa Touch is a simple, minimally invasive, medical CO2 laser treatment employed to treat genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM). It is a hormone free, non-surgical procedure performed in an outpatient setting without the requirement of anesthesia and with essentially no pain and minimal side effects.

How Does MonaLisa Touch Work?

Menopausal women and those who have received certain cancer treatments can suffer from estrogen deficiency. This can cause thinning and dryness of the vaginal tissues known as vaginal atrophy, making intercourse uncomfortable or even painful due to reduced lubrication in the vagina because of diminished estrogen levels. MonaLisa Touch works by stimulating both surface and deep layers of vaginal tissue to produce collagen and promote blood flow, and restore vaginal elasticity and lubrication.

Indications for MonaLisa Touch

MonaLisa Touch is usually indicated as a treatment option for women suffering from the symptoms of genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM). Doctors commonly use the term "genitourinary syndrome of menopause" to describe vaginal atrophy and its accompanying symptoms.

Symptoms Necessitating MonaLisa Touch Treatment

Some of the common symptoms of genitourinary syndrome of menopause that necessitates MonaLisa Touch treatment include:

  • Vulvar dryness
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Vaginal itching
  • Dyspareunia (painful sex)
  • Dysuria (painful urination)
  • Decreased vaginal elasticity

MonaLisa Touch Procedure

The procedure is carried out on an outpatient basis without anesthesia and takes only a few minutes. It is usually performed in a cycle of 3-4 sessions with 6 weeks in between each session. No incision or sutures are required. Results are usually noticed following the first session.

During the procedure, a small metal wand resembling an ultrasound wand is placed into the vagina, to deliver gentle laser energy to the vaginal wall tissue and turned in a clockwise and counter-clockwise motion to stimulate a healing response in the vaginal canal. Although this is a painless procedure, some patients may report mild discomfort during laser tip insertion.

Side Effects of MonaLisa Touch

As with most invasive procedures, you may experience temporary side-effects such as redness, swelling and discomfort for 1-2 days which subside on their own with adequate rest, and avoidance of heavy exercise and hot baths.
